Released in October 2013, Batman: Arkham Origins was developed by WB Games Montreal with support from Splash Damage and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The game follows a young, unproven Batman still earning his place as Gotham’s protector. Set years before Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, the story begins when crime boss Black Mask places a bounty on the Dark Knight’s head. Eight notorious hitmen - including Deathstroke, Firefly and Deadshot - hunt him down, while he has to deal with the corrupt police and the growing threat of an as yet unknown Joker. While the plot delivers some exciting twists, many found it lacking a strong climax.
The open world is noticeably larger than in Arkham City, allowing players to freely explore Gotham’s snow-covered streets. Despite the festive setting, the city feels empty, with no civilians or traffic, lacking the vibrancy of a real metropolis. The free-flow combat system remains a highlight, delivering smooth, dynamic battles that stay engaging thanks to smart enemy behavior. Boss fights stand out in particular, demanding precise counterattacks and strategic use of gadgets. However, Arkham Origins introduces little innovation. The gameplay is nearly identical to Arkham City, with no significant improvements. According to GOG, the main story takes about 12.5 hours to complete, while finishing all side quests extends playtime to roughly 21.5 hours.
Proven Arkham formula, but without innovation
Arkham Origins sticks to the proven Arkham formula, offering a vast open world and a well-executed combat system, making it a solid choice for fans of the DC universe. However, many players wished for a deeper story, a more dynamic world and greater innovation compared to its predecessors. Despite these criticisms, the game received mostly positive reviews. On Metacritic, it holds a Metascore of 74 and a User Score of 7.5. On Steam, it has gathered 38,000 reviews, with 89% being positive.
