Developed by Rebellion Developments and released in 2017, Sniper Elite 4 is a third-person shooter set in 1943. Players take on the role of elite sniper Karl Fairburne, sent to the Italian front by US intelligence to sabotage fascist forces and eliminate a new threat to the Allies. While the story isn’t the game’s strongest point, its sniper mechanics and stealth gameplay make it a solid choice for fans of tactical shooters.
Sniper Elite 4 doesn’t introduce major gameplay innovations over its predecessor but stays true to its core strength, realistic sniper mechanics. Bullets follow an accurate trajectory, taking wind, distance and breath control into account. The signature kill-cam delivers satisfying slow-motion shots as bullets shatter bones and tear through organs. Stealth plays a key role, letting players eliminate enemies silently, cover their tracks and manipulate sound to lure guards into traps.
The open mission areas in Sniper Elite 4 offer plenty of freedom in approach. Whether you prefer long-range shots with sound-masking, silent takedowns with distractions or booby traps for controlled chaos, the choice is yours. However, the enemy AI is a common criticism, sometimes spotting bodies from afar, while other times ignoring obvious dangers. Melee combat also feels a bit clunky compared to the smooth stealth mechanics found in other games of the genre. Beyond the solo campaign, Sniper Elite 4 features a co-op mode for tackling missions with a friend and a PvP mode where players can test their skills in tactical sniper duels.
Exciting sniper gameplay, but with certain weaknesses
What players love most about Sniper Elite 4 is its thrilling sniper gameplay, flexible stealth mechanics and expansive, varied maps. However, criticisms include the weak story, inconsistent AI and lack of innovation, as many mechanics remain unchanged from previous entries. While the missions offer variety, some can feel repetitive due to their similar structure.
The multiplayer mode in Sniper Elite 4 received mixed reactions. While co-op play is well-integrated and encourages strategic teamwork, the traditional PvP mode feels somewhat out of place, as the game's slow, tactical pace doesn’t naturally lend itself to standard multiplayer duels. Despite some drawbacks, the game has around 50,000 Steam reviews, with 91% being positive. On Metacritic, scores are slightly lower due to its noted weaknesses, with a Metascore of 78 and a User Score of 7.1.
