Special Sony PlayStation 5 shown for Jim Ryan with custom PS1 retro design
Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has presented its outgoing CEO with a one-of-a-kind PlayStation 5. To recap, Jim Ryan announced in September that he would be leaving SIE in March 2024, with COO Hiroki Totoki serving as interim CEO thereafter. While Ryan has been SIE CEO since 2019, his Sony career started in 1994 with its European division.
Despite not officially retiring for another few months, SIE has already hosted a leaving party for its outgoing CEO. By way of a leaving present, SIE gifted Ryan a PlayStation 5 themed to resemble the original PlayStation. Arguably, the special edition unit looks more like a blend of the PlayStation and PS one than just the original PlayStation, which sported a deeper grey hue that the side panels and DualSense controller have.
Surprisingly, SIE sought to customise the original PlayStation 5 and not the newer not-so-Slim variant. Other touches include a custom USB cable that mimics the controller port and cable design that SIE dropped with the PlayStation 3. Additionally, the console's packaging can also be seen, which accurately recreates the box design of the original PlayStation. Given that SIE designed this themed PlayStation 5 exclusively for Jim Ryan, @InstallBase's photo could be the only one we see of it.
