Sony has finally released its alternative to Microsoft's Xbox Adaptive Controller. Available for $89.99 in the US, the Sony Access Controller is highly customisable and is billed as an 'all-inclusive kit in a box'.

Sony is now selling its first accessibility controller, five years after Microsoft released the equivalent Xbox Adaptive Controller. To recap, Sony showcased the Access Controller as Project Leonardo in January during CES 2023. Subsequently, the company published a short introductory video, which we have embedded below.

In short, the Access Controller is a highly customisable controller, which Sony described to the BBC in the following terms:

The idea is that you unbox it and you can start using it right away as a PlayStation controller...to the extent that this works for you and is comfortable for you, there is no need for you to purchase additional third party accessories and buttons and wire it all together... we wanted an all-inclusive kit in a box.

For context, Sony developed the Access Controller with AbleGamers, a nonprofit aimed at improving accessibility for gamers. Surprisingly, Sony has only included a single joystick by default, despite the integration of two joysticks across controllers for the last two decades or so. As a result, Sony recommends using two Access Controllers simultaneously, a second joystick through of one of the controller's four expansion ports or the DualSense itself. The Access Controller is orderable now, with prices set at 89.99, €89.99 and £79.99 for the US, Eurozone and UK, respectively.
