Sony caught confusing Xperia smartphone branding amid Xperia 1 VIII rumours

Sony is expected to give the Xperia 1 a long-awaited makeover in the next few weeks. Arguably, the design of the Xperia 1 series has remained broadly unchanged since 2020 when Sony introduced the Xperia 1 II. Although the company has now moved away from a 21:9 display, the current Xperia 1 VII maintains multiple design cues from its predecessors.
Based on recent rumours, the Xperia 1 VIII will be the first in the series that moves away from vertically-arranged cameras. In fact, the Xperia 1 VIII appears to bear a greater resemblance to the OnePlus 10T (curr. $234 - refurbished on Amazon) than the Xperia 1 smartphones that come before it.

For the time being, the design shown above is a render image produced from leaked CAD file, rather than anything official. Nonetheless, multiple Redditors spotted Sony getting mixed up with its naming scheme across its social media accounts.
Quickly corrected, the references to the Xperia 1 VIII have appeared less than a month before the Xperia 1 VII's first birthday. Ultimately, these social media posts were likely a mistake, particularly given that they show the older Xperia 1 VII instead of its successor. Still, they have gotten fans talking about the prospect of the Xperia 1 VIII being released in the process.
