Sony has brought a new feature to the WF-1000XM4, four months after teasing the change alongside a new version of the LinkBuds S. For reference, the WF-1000XM4 will turn two years old in June; Sony's product release schedule means that the WF-1000XM4 is ripe for being replaced with a newer model. In that vein, an apparent WF-1000XM5 recently passed through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US.
While it is unclear when Sony will announce the WF-1000XM5, the company has now delivered on its promise to enable Bluetooth Multipoint connectivity on the WF-1000XM4. According to Sony's changelog, the update should take roughly 35 minutes to install with the WF-1000XM4 paired to an Android smartphone. Conversely, it may take upwards of 60 minutes for the same installation to complete on an iPhone. As such, Sony only recommends upgrading the WF-1000XM4 when there is little chance of the earbuds disconnecting from a paired device. The earbuds remain usable during that time, though.
Reportedly, Bluetooth Multipoint works without issue on V2.0.0 and allows the WF-1000XM4 to connect to two devices simultaneously. However, the update does not appear to address the battery life issues that V1.6.1 caused. Please see Sony's changelog for more details.
