The well-known Weibo social media user ZACKBUKS frequently reveals tidbits about Sony Xperia smartphones, and a recent post seems to imply that a new smartwatch, possibly even an Xperia-branded one, could be on its way. However, machine translation of the post from Chinese to English does create some unfortunate ambiguity, so a pinch of salt should be taken with this one. The translation roughly goes:
As a thing of the past, Sony Strap Bracelet Wena was incorporated into Sony's Mobile Communications division in April 2021, and there may be a future Xperia x Wena linkage, hopefully at home as well [in China].
The part that reads “may be a future Xperia x Wena linkage” could be interpreted as Wena using its smartwatch and smart bracelet knowhow in the production of a potential Xperia wearable, such as a Sony Xperia smartwatch, but it could also be translated as the ability to pair a Wena product with an Xperia smartphone. But then the last part “hopefully at home as well” once again suggests there is a new product in the mix here that could be released in China “as well”.
Xperia Watch or Sony SmartWatch 4? The market for smartwatches is much riper now and Sony might want to bring in an official successor to 2014’s SmartWatch 3. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to attach the familiar and widely respected Xperia brand name to a smartwatch, either. Sony is not a stranger to the market, and one of these potential devices sporting the latest Android 11-based Wear OS could shake things up if also implemented with much-wanted popular features, such as SpO2 measurement and GPS.
