The latest interpretation of a popular survival horror IP hasn’t convinced all fans. Silent Hill: Townfall Steam player counts are lagging compared to Silent Hill f and the Silent Hill 2 remake. Inconsistent performance and varying opinions of stealth-heavy gameplay are two factors.

Performance problems overshadowed the September 24th Silent Hill: Townfall release date. Mixed Steam reviews highlight this issue, and peak concurrent player counts are well below those of previous titles. On its first weekend, Townfall has nearly 2/3rds fewer supporters than Silent Hill f and the second mainline entry’s remake.

Not a record-setting debut

The Silent Hill 2 remake launched in October 2024, and immediately reached its high-water mark of 23,676 players. Silent Hill f followed in September 2025 and posted a comparable number of 22,621. Unfortunately, as SteamDB shows, the spinoff set in Scotland is far behind at 8,360.

Silent Hill: Townfall Steam reviews continue to report inconsistent frame rates. Shader compilation is the culprit in the Unreal Engine 5 project, where exploring new areas in St. Amelia produces stuttering. Frustrating, capable gaming PCs otherwise deliver maximum readings significantly above 60 fps.

A day ahead of the September 24th release date, Konami already announced a patch was in the works. So far, the optimization-oriented update hasn’t surfaced during the critical first week for sales. That said, both Silent Hill f and the Silent Hill 2 remake suffered from similar problems and registered higher player counts.

Divisive gameplay changes

Volatile performance isn't the only factor behind the disappointing Silent Hill: Townfall player counts. PC users on Valve’s marketplace also express uneven opinions of its gameplay. The first-person perspective is a departure from most titles in the survival horror series. That sparked debates as to whether Screen Burn Interactive took too many liberties with the spinoff.

Other fans believe the game focuses too much on puzzle-solving. The breaks between combat can build tension, but lead to complaints about inconsistent pacing.

The media appears somewhat less divided on the Konami-published newcomer. Townfall has an average Metacritic score of 81, which only slightly trails competing entries in the franchise. Silent Hill f and the modernized Silent Hill 2 sit at 86 on the review aggregator.
