The Galaxy Z Fold 7 has advanced the series in several areas, including weight and thickness. However, a reduction in the latter has come at the expense of S Pen support, which has become a mainstay in the Galaxy Z Fold series in the last few years. For context, Samsung began offering a dedicated Galaxy Z Fold S Pen for the Galaxy Z Fold3 in 2021.
S Pen support ended with the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, which arrived roughly three months after the Galaxy Z Fold6 but only in China and South Korea. Unfortunately, rumours that Samsung had developed new S Pen technologies in time for the Galaxy Z Fold7 (curr. $1,999.99 on Amazon) were wide of the mark. With that being said, an Executive Director of Samsung's MX division has indicated that S Pen support could return for future Galaxy Z Fold generations.
Speaking with ET News, Kang Min-seok emphasised that removing S Pen functionality was a trade-off to achieve the Galaxy Z Fold7's 4.2 mm thickness when opened. For reference, Samsung's S Pen digitiser has been said to add up to 0.6 mm to overall device thickness. With that being said, Honor manages to offer stylus support on both of the Magic V5's displays.
With that being said, Kang Min-seok added that Samsung is actively researching and developing ways of creating 'thinner and innovative' S Pen technologies. Moreover, the executive stresses that Samsung will reconsider bringing back S Pen support when it manages to refine the underlying hardware and if consumer demand remains.
