Tesla will be launching a larger Model Y L later this year, just as rumored. The official Tesla account in China, where the six-seat Model Y L will be released first this fall, has posted a teaser of its silhouette and the new badging that seems to convey that it will be a 3-row Model Y SUV.
A dig in the local certification base has revealed more of the Tesla Model Y specs and dimensions, too, hinting that the L may simply denote a Model Y "Large" version.
Six-seat Tesla Model Y L dimensions
The new, bigger Model Y L seems to have grown in size in order to fit two more seats, pointing that they might be bigger than the child-sized seats in the trunk of the 7-seat Model Y version.
At 4,976 mm (188.8 inches), the Model Y L is about seven inches longer than the current 5-seat Model Y refresh that Tesla sells in the US. It is about two inches higher via a visibly redesigned C-pillar, likely offering more headroom for the back seats, which is an important consideration given its aerodynamic design with sloping rear.
The wheelbase has also been lengthened by about six inches, giving away why Tesla denotes it as the "large" version. Tesla has also crafted a new Model Y L badging, which is made to look like three stylized rows of seats.
While the enlarged Model Y L size still doesn't sound enough for a full-fledged 3-row Model Y, Tesla may have worked around this by providing three pairs of seats instead of back benches. It is a rather common practice and a popular seating arrangement for family SUVs in China. Those have four captain seats in the first and second row, and two full-sized seats connected on the back.
The respective TSL6500BEVBA0 entry in the government's certification database confirms that the new Model Y L is a six-seat SUV, but it remains to be seen how did Tesla go about the seating configuration.
There are two pictures of the vehicle in a side and a rear shot, but it's hard to deduce the exact seating location on those, and only the longer wheelbase and the stylized logo indicate that this might be a 3-row Model Y.

Tesla teases a Model Y L release in the "golden autumn," confirming previous rumors that it will be releasing a six-seat Model Y in the fall. As if to celebrate the autumn launch, the Model Y L may come in a new light gold color as seen in the certification pictures.
The Model Y L price, on the other hand, has leaked before, with insiders claiming that it will be pegged at about RMB 400,000 in local currency, or the equivalent of $55,710.
For comparison, Tesla sells the current 5-seat Model Y Long Range AWD in China for about $43,705, so the larger Model Y with more seats may come with quite the markup in price.
