The upcoming six-seat Tesla Model Y L trim will have a longer range on a charge than the regular AWD version, despite being larger and heavier.
According to its TSL6500BEVBA0 entry in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology - the Chinese regulatory body that certifies new vehicles - the Tesla Model Y L will launch with an 82 kWh battery. While the rumored 90 kWh battery specs didn't materialize, the 3-row Model Y hasn't taken a hit when it comes to the distance it can cover on a single charge.
The 82 kWh pack could be the same one by LG Energy that Tesla is equipping the AWD trim with. Still, the Model Y L is rated for the slightly longer, 751 km (467 miles) range on a charge, even though it comes with 189 lbs heavier curb weight as it is seven inches longer and about two inches taller.
That range, of course, is calculated by the local CLTC testing method, which is about a third more generous than the EPA estimate in the US. When accounting for that exuberance, the Model Y L could sport a range on charge pretty similar to the current 327 miles of EPA estimate for the AWD model in the US.
The first six-seat Model Y trim will offer an ingenious 3-row configuration with four captain seats in the first two rows, and two full-size seats at the back that sit a tad lower so that there is more headroom for taller passengers there.
The second row reportedly comes with motorized seats that can not only move back and forth to free up more legroom for the foldable third row, but also fold flat, too, turning the Model Y L into a true cargo hauler.
The rear seats of the new 2026 Model Y fold flat with the push of a button, and Tesla may introduce something similar for the four rear seats in the L trim that offers a longer wheelbase for the first time on a Model Y.
