After months of leaks, speculations and rumours, Samsung's first-ever tri-folding smartphone is finally here. Weirdly, it was released slyly via a press release instead of a dedicated event, given Samsung is the second OEM ever to pull something like this off.
Specs-wise, you get a 10-inch dynamic AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2160 x 1584 pixels, 120 Hz refresh rate, 1,600 nits peak brightness, and 100$ DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage. Its cover display uses the same panel in a 6.5-inch form factor with 2,600 nits peak brightness.
The Galaxy Z TriFold measures 159.2 x 75.0 x 12.9 mm when folded and 159.2 x 75.0 x 3.9 mm when unfolded, making it 0.3 mm thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and one of the thinnest foldable smartphones to launch in the market. The foldable weighs 309 grams without accounting for the pre-applied protective film, which will probably add a few more grams to the overall weight.
For water and dust resistance, the smartphone comes with an IP48 rating. Samsung claims the Galaxy Z TriFold uses its 'Most Advanced Hinges Yet', with two differently sized hinges employing a dual-rail design. The chassis is made of Advanced Armour Aluminium, and a layer of ceramic-glass fibre-reinforced polymer protects the actual panel. Samsung hasn't specified how many folds either screen is rated for, but they'll likely be lower than traditional foldables.
The Galaxy Z TriFold can double up as a productivity machine
To take advantage of the Galaxy Z TriFold's 10-inch screen, it comes with a standalone Samsung DeX client, essentially transforming your smartphone into a veritable laptop. You can set up to four workspaces and run five apps simultaneously. Alternatively, those looking for extra screen real estate can do so via an external monitor.
Other Galaxy Z TriFold specs include a 5,600 mAh battery, the same as Huawei's Mate XT. It charges at up to 45 Watts, which, at this point, has become standard fare on Samsung phones. For the SoC, it uses a last-gen Snapdragon 8 Elite and not the top-spec Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Memory is fixed at 16 GB, and storage can vary between 256 GB and 512 GB.
For the cameras, Samsung uses a 200 MP wide-angle lens, a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a 10 MP telephoto sensor (3x Optical Zoom and 10x Digital Zoom). The cover and primary displays get a 10 MP sensor each for selfies and video calls. Wireless connectivity features include 5G, Wi-Fi 7 and NFC. A side-mounted capacitive fingerprint sensor allows for biometric authentication.
At the time of writing, the Galaxy Z TriFold will only be available for purchase in South Korea, with China, Taiwan, Singapore, the UAE and U.S expected to follow suit soon. Samsung will sell it in only one Crafted Black colour. Its price isn't official, but if recent leaks are anything to go by, it could be as high as $3,000.
