Samsung reportedly developing the world's thinnest foldable smartphone
Even though Samsung bought foldable smartphones into the mainstream, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is considered by many to be an iterative upgrade over its predecessors. Meanwhile, Chinese OEMs are pushing the boundary by shaving off an mm or two with every subsequent launch. A report from Naver says Samsung could retake the "thinnest foldable phone" crown soon.
The company aims to develop a foldable that is just 7 mm thick when folded, meaning each half would be roughly around 3.5 mm thick. Essentially, this will be thinner than the Honor Magic V3 (9.2 mm) and Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 (9.4 mm). Exactly how Samsung plans to achieve this feat remains a mystery, but it will likely come at the expense of S Pen functionality and reduced battery capacity, among other compromises.
There have been multiple rumours of a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim. It is unknown if they're separate devices or the same one called by different names. Nevertheless, it'll be a while before we find out because it has been cancelled indefinitely. Is this the above mentioned 7 mm thin foldable phone? Only time will tell.
The report also talks about Samsung's other strategy for foldables. Currently, a smartphone can do just about everything a foldable can. Samsung plans to remedy this by adding exclusive features to the latter. Unfortunately, there's no word about what the said features could be. Meanwhile, there' still no word about when Samsung's tri-fold tablet will launch despite being shown off over three years ago.
