Rumours have been coming fast over the last month around the camera module of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S25 Ultra. A few (lesser known) tipsters claimed that a triple-camera module would replace the current quad-camera one, but they were met by contradiction from others, including one Ice Universe, who has now shared some exciting new details.
On a Weibo post, Ice Universe claims that both the ultrawide and 3x telephoto cameras will finally be upgraded to 50 MP sensors. The ultrawide unit currently uses a 12 MP sensor, and the 3x camera a 10 MP one. Both units have remained unchanged since the S21 Ultra, and many feel that the relatively outdated sensors are a glaring chink in the armour of an otherwise stellar camera setup (read our review of the S24 Ultra).
It’s worth adding that since both these cameras are the same on the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s smaller siblings, the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+, it’s safe to say that any upgrade will be seen across the S25 lineup.
Meanwhile, the main camera and the 5x lens are expected to stick with their current 200 MP and 50 MP sensors, respectively. With the other two also getting a bump in resolution, pixel binning techniques should allow the S25 Ultra to achieve better low-light performance consistently across the focal length range, at least on paper.
Zooming between the fixed focal lengths is always somewhat awkward, as the phone essentially disguises digital zoom as continuous optical zoom (notable exception: the Sony Xperia 1 V). That should be improved with a higher resolution sensor, as would potentially macro performance, if Samsung decides to give the 3x shooter a smaller close-focusing distance.
We can no doubt expect more reports of varying credibility to come in about the S25 Ultra’s cameras and other specs, but this is one that, if true, will be most welcome by Samsung fans.
