Google Pixel 9 successor: First proof of a "Samsung-free" Tensor G5 chip in the Pixel 10

The first concrete indications of an chip overhaul after four Google Tensor generations have been discovered in an import/export database, but this will only come with the successor to the Pixel 9 in 2025. It is said to have nothing in common with Samsung's Exynos chipsets and will no longer be produced by Samsung, which has now been proven.

Since the Pixel 6 from 2021, Google has no longer relied on Qualcomm chipsets but on its own processors, although this is only half the truth, as those familiar with the matter will know. All Tensor generations to date, including the Tensor G4 expected in the successor to the Pixel 8 (available here on Amazon), not only contain a lot of Exynos technology, but the Samsung architecture adapted by Google is also manufactured by Samsung itself, which has made for somewhat less efficient Pixel Phones, at least to date.

However, as has already been reported several times, this is expected to change fundamentally in 2025. The Tensor G5 in the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro, which is already under development under the codename "Laguna Beach", will be a completely independent Google design based on ARM for the first time and will also be manufactured at TSMC in Taiwan in the future, at least according to an entry in an import-export database, which has been broken down and explained by developer Kamila Wojciechowska, who writes for Android Authority.

Google's first completely proprietary chipset already being tested

The image below decodes meaningless clues in the database. Chip manufacturer TSMC and its InFO POP technology are mentioned by name, while the only Samsung part is the integrated 16 GB RAM (Sec), i.e., the same amount as in the Pixel 9 Pro. The abbreviation LGA shows that it is indeed Laguna Beach, while the "A0" chip revision and "OTP V1" revision indicate the first test model, which was sent from Google LCC in Taiwan to an external test center called Tessolve Semiconductor in India.

The virtual shipping label also provides further information about the transaction. NPI-Open (New Product Introduction) again points to a very early chip version, as Google will probably need 16 months of testing time for its first independent design before the launch of the Pixel 9 successor. The planned tests also include an SLT (system-level test), which comprises comprehensive test procedures for the chip in a prototype.
