The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X has taken over as a firm fan favorite with DIY PC builders judging by the latest CPU sales data taken from Mindfactory, a huge German retailer that specializes in consumer electronics. Strong sales of both Zen 2 and Zen 3 desktop chips have left AMD far ahead of Intel in this interesting snapshot of the semiconductor market.

Mindfactory CPU sales data for week 33 has been compiled and shared by TechEpiphany and as always it makes for fascinating reading. Understandably, AMD is way beyond Intel’s reach in both units sold and revenue made, but this is a common theme with Mindfactory data and is to be expected in the DIY enthusiast realm. Intel has its huge contracts to supply OEMs and datacenters with its chips, so it will unlikely be too perturbed about the sales data taken from one specific retailer, no matter how far behind Team Blue is in comparison to Team Red.

There are some takeaways to be had from this new data, including the fact that the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X has definitely solidified its position as a fan favorite. As TechEpiphany points out, the mainstream 6-core CPU’s sales outnumber the total of all Intel chips combined. An impressive 940 units of the Ryzen 5 5600X were sold, with more-core champions Ryzen 7 5800X and Ryzen 9 5900X also racking up big numbers, with 610 and 400 units sold, respectively. In contrast, the most popular Intel chip, the Core i7-11700K, only brought in 90 sales.

The totaled figures in both units sold and revenue are certainly demonstrative of AMD’s popularity in this particular arena. Team Red saw 2,985 of its chips sold for total revenue of €960,429 (US$1.12 million) while Team Blue managed 825 unit sales and €183,949 (US$215,126) revenue. In terms of percentages, this leaves AMD on 78.35% (units) and 83.93% (revenue) compared to Intel with 21.65% (units) and 16.07% (revenue). While Alder Lake could make something of a splash in the market, due to its intriguing hybrid properties, Windows 11 optimizations, and promising early benchmarks, it’s reasonably safe to say there will be plenty eagerly awaiting the Zen 4 Raphael family from AMD.
