Intel Core i7-12700 trades blows with the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X on Geekbench
The Core i7-12700 has appeared on Geekbench, one of Intel's many upcoming Alder Lake-S processors. Incidentally, HKEPC has published another photo of an Alder Lake-S engineering sample, which we have embedded above. Oddly, the Core i7-12700 cannot reach the scores of the Core i7-11700K, an 8 core processor with 16 threads and a 125 W TDP.
Additionally, the Alder Lake-S chip falls short of the Ryzen 7 5800X in Geekbench's single-core benchmark, along with even the Ryzen 5 5600X. Similarly, the Core i7-12700 is around 10% off the Core i7-11700K and the Ryzen 7 5800X in the multi-core benchmark. According to our database, the Alder Lake-S engineering sample performs below the level of the Core i9-10910, another 125 W processor.
On the other hand, VideoCardz notes that the Core i7-12700 outscores the Core i7-11700 by approximately 15% in the same multi-core benchmark. Geekbench also lists the Core i7-12700 as having 8 cores and 16 threads, which would be unusual for an Alder Lake-S processor.
Instead, we suspect that the benchmarking software has not recognised Alder Lake's hybrid architecture. If this is the case, then the Core i7-12700 may have an 8+4 core arrangement like the Core i7-12700K.
