Realme has now refreshed its high-end GT smartphone series with the Realme GT 8. For context, the GT 8 has arrived alongside the GT 8 Pro, with which it shares many characteristics. The Realme GT 8 departs from the design of its predecessor though (curr. $799 on Amazon), despite Realme only introducing the Realme GT 7 in the spring.
The differences between the Realme GT 7 and Realme GT 8 are more than skin deep, too. For instance, Realme has switched the MediaTek Dimensity 9400e it used in the global version of the GT 7 and the Dimensity 9400+ in its Chinese counterpart for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite. According to our benchmarks, this change alone should provide the Realme GT 8 with a massive performance boost over its predecessor. The newer model retains the 7,000 mAh battery from the Realme GT 7, albeit with support for 100 W wired charging instead of 120 W. Wireless charging remains unsupported, too.
The 50 MP primary (1/1.56-inch) and 8 MP ultra-wide-angle (1/4.0-inch) cameras from the Realme GT 7 also return. However, Realme has swapped the 50 MP and 2x telephoto camera from the global model for a 3.5x alternative that retains a 50 MP native output but drops to an f/2.8 aperture. Unfortunately, Realme persists with the 16 MP front-facing camera found in the Chinese version of the GT 7 rather than the 32 MP equivalent found in its Global counterpart.
The Realme GT 8 matches its Pro counterpart with support for Ricoh camera filters and camera modes. Also, the GT 8 boasts a 6.79-inch AMOLED display that delivers 4,000 nits full panel brightness with a 144 Hz refresh rate and a 1440p resolution. The Realme GT 8 starts at CNY 2,899 (~$407) in China with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Alternatively, the device can be configured up to 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage but for CNY 4,099 (~$575). There is no word on international availability yet, though.
