Ray-Ban Meta glasses get multimodal AI assistant, new frame styles and video calling
Back in December last year, Meta had begun testing the Meta AI assistant on the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses through an opt-in early access program in the US. Now, Meta AI is finally coming to all customers across the US and Canada. With the slew of AI based portable/wearable devices in the news lately, the timing is certainly apt. Alongside this are other new features such as video calling via WhatsApp or Messenger, as well as voice control for Apple Music.
Software updates
Meta’s smart glasses house a 12 MP wide-angle camera, multiple mics and a pair of directional open-ear speakers. Thus, the multimodal AI can accept a verbal query based on what the camera sees in real-time, such as “Look at this building and tell me about it”, or “Translate this sign to English”. Meta AI’s answer, in audio form, is piped into the wearer’s ears. The feature is still in Beta stage.
Another exciting and useful upcoming feature is video calling via WhatsApp or Messenger, which will allow a wearer to share a real-time point-of-view video hands free. This one is still under development, with no release date announced. As reported by The Verge, Meta has also introduced Apple Music compatibility to the Meta View app, i.e. the ability to control to play a specific song, artist or playlist, or to get recommendations based on listening history.
New frame designs unveiled
The updates continue on the aesthetics side, with two new frame designs being announced. Skyler is a new shape, described by Meta as a “cat eye design inspired by an era of iconic jet-set style, designed to suit smaller faces.” The other new frame is a low bridge variant of the Headliner, designed for those whose glasses “tend to slide down their nose, sit too low on their face or press on their cheeks.” The new designs, along with the Wayfarer are available in 15 countries, in various frame and lens colour combinations.
