Apple Music might soon offer incentives to artists and record labels to make songs available in spatial audio formats, like Dolby Atmos. For listeners, this means that Apple Music will offer more spatial audio music that feels 3D and mimics a life-like experience.
As per the latest report on Bloomberg, Apple Music plans to give added weighting to streams of songs that are available in Dolby Atmos format alongside the traditional stereo versions. Artists and record labels that adopt the audio technology and create spatial sound versions will get higher royalty payments. Further, listeners do not have to interact with the Atmos version for the artists to get paid - the spatial version just has to be made available.
At the moment, Apple has not officially announced the new policy or incentives. In 2021, Apple added support for Dolby Atmos, and today, the format is supported on iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, iMac, and even AirPods. If implemented, it might be a noteworthy move as Spotify is yet to make spatial audio available on its platform.
