OpenAI’s donut with cameras, speakers, and ChatGPT said to be portable but expensive

It’s no longer a secret that OpenAI plans to offer not only software but also hardware in the future. Bloomberg was able to uncover further details about the ChatGPT manufacturer’s first smart home product. According to the report, it is a smart speaker roughly the size of a hockey puck, with a diameter of about 7.6 centimeters.

The casing is said to be shaped like a donut, and the opening in the center is designed to make it easier to grip the speaker with one hand and carry it from one room to another. For this purpose, the device has a built-in battery. Part of the casing is said to be able to move via a motor to provide users with visual feedback while they converse with ChatGPT through the speaker. An LED indicates when the device is listening.

A camera and other sensors allow ChatGPT to see its surroundings and react to them, for example, to answer questions about objects in the real world. Aside from that, the hardware consists primarily of speakers and microphones. The product was reportedly developed in collaboration with Apple’s former chief designer, Jonathan Ive, and is said to use high-quality materials such as metal. However, this also results in a high price – the speaker reportedly costs between $300 and $400, making it more expensive than the Amazon Echo Studio ($219 on Amazon). The launch is reportedly scheduled for 2027.
