Noctua is best known as a CPU cooler and computer fan manufacturer, although it has also extended its fans to being used in custom graphics cards like the Asus GeForce RTX 4080 Noctua Edition. The company introduced two 'multi-purpose' fans last year too, which it markets as the NV-FS1 desk fan and NV-FS2 (curr. $79.90 on Amazon) that can be used to cool various devices.
Now, the company claims that the latter can be used to improve home radiator efficiency. In principle, Noctua asserts that the NV-FS2 would be best paired with convection radiators that receive water from heat pumps at 30°C to 50°C rather than conventional gas or oil boilers that reach upwards of 80°C.
Allegedly, adding an active fan allows air to circulate more freely, thereby heating a room more effectively. In fact, Noctua goes as far as to say that installing an NV-FS2 on top or below a radiator can prevent mould from growing in well-insulated homes.
The company believes that 'active radiator ventilation' can limit energy consumption in older homes with poor insulation as well by reducing overall boiler load. Even more outlandishly, Noctua reports that its solution can drop heating costs by an 'estimated 5-10%'.
Crucially, Noctua has not provided any evidence for its claims, monetary or otherwise. Likewise, it has not included any specific figures in its press release. As a result, we would recommend taking any of the company's recommendations with an awful lot of scepticism for the time being.
