Xiaomi has been widely reported to be preparing its next-gen flagship phones, the Xiaomi 16 series, to debut later this month as the first devices with Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. New information, however, reveals that there will not be a Xiaomi 16 series.
As shared by Xiaomi President Lu Weibing, Xiaomi's imminent premium phones will be branded as the Xiaomi 17 series instead. The executive claims the Xiaomi 17 series will deliver the "most significant leap forward" in the company's history. Three devices will debut this month: the vanilla Xiaomi 17, the Xiaomi 17 Pro, and the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max.
The Xiaomi 17 will arrive as a compact high-end phone with a price tag unchanged from last year's Xiaomi 15. The Xiaomi 17 Pro will be an even more premium compact device, while the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is said to be Xiaomi's most impressive camera smartphone yet. There are no mentions of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, likely because that phone will not debut till next year.
In a rather interesting twist, Xiaomi makes no attempt at hiding its intentions behind skipping the Xiaomi 16 series. Summarily, the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 phones are benchmarked against the iPhone 17 series, and will rival Apple's new devices "with the same generation and level".
