New affordable Casio watches launch with day-date display, ion-plated cases
Casio's newly launched MTP-1440DJ doesn't aim to be anything other than a plain three-hand watch. However, that's the whole appeal of these affordable watches. Two references are now live for preorder — MTP-1440DJ-1AJF with a black dial, MTP-1440DJ-7BJF with white. They're both priced at ¥7,700, or approximately $48. Numerals can be seen at every hour, a date-and-day window lands at 3 o'clock with a Japanese/English toggle, and that's essentially the entire feature list.
What's mildly surprising is the build underneath. The case is brass, instead of resin Casio typically includes in its watches at this price. All that is finished in a silver IP coating, and the bracelet uses a one-push three-fold Nakadome clasp. If you're unfamiliar, that's the same release-button clasp mechanism Casio puts on considerably pricier metal-band watches, not the basic pin buckles usually found on sub-$50 pieces. That bumps the weight up to 92 grams, which is relatively heavier than a comparable resin watch at this size.
Specs are quite modest, as you would expect. You get 5 atmospheres of water resistance, inorganic (not hardened mineral) glass, and roughly three years of battery life with average monthly accuracy around ±20 seconds. The case measures 41 x 36.3 x 8.6 mm, with a band that adjusts across 150-205 mm.
Neither reference is new ground for Casio's MTP line, which has run this full-numeral, three-hand format for decades across dozens of variations. The black-dial -1AJF looks slightly more formal with white numerals on a dark face; the white-dial -7BJF is closer to a classic dress watch, with black numerals and a cleaner look.
Like the MRW-240H covered earlier, the listing also has Casio's "Eco-Package" tag, which refers to reduced or recyclable retail packaging rather than any material change to the watch itself. Both MTP-1440DJ models are open for preorder on Casio Japan's site now, with shipping expected in August 2026.
