There has been plenty of talk in the last few months of Samsung releasing its first tri-fold smartphone, buoyed by showcases of prototypes shown by Samsung Display at numerous trade shows in the last few years. Based on current expectations, the device will launch later this year resembling the Flex G, a newer version of Samsung Display has brought to MWC 2025 in Barcelona too.
The display manufacturer has also used this year's MWC to exhibit the Asymmetric Flip for the first time. A tri-fold itself, the Asymmetric Flip stays true to the external design of the Galaxy Z Flip6 (curr. $949.99 on Amazon), albeit without a cover display.
Theoretically, this form factor would remove the centre crease from a clamshell foldable. In its current guise, the Asymmetric Flip leaves a gap when closed, which would be a durability concern in a retail unit. The concept woud also be taller than the Galaxy Z Flip when closed, somewhat defeating a major reason for the form factor's existence.
Nonetheless, the concept serves to confirm that Samsung Display is developing tri-fold panels for clamshell form factors too, and not just their larger book-style counterparts. Please note that Samsung Display does not release devices directly, unlike Samsung Electronics. As a result, there are no guarantees that the Asymmetric Flip will ever come to market.
