Xiaomi has elaborated on the technology that underpins its Modular Optical System (MOS) accessory designed for an adapted Xiaomi 15. Still a concept for now, the MOS is an early example of an M4/3 sensor with a 100 MP native output.

Xiaomi gave the world a glimpse of its Modular Optical System (MOS) yesterday after presenting the Xiaomi 15Xiaomi 15 Ultra and other new devices globally. Today, the company has exhibited its MOS prototype at MWC 2025 in Barcelona, while also sharing more details in the process.

To recap, Xiaomi confirmed on Sunday that the MOS leverages a Micro Four Thirds (M4/3) sensor. In summary, the M4/3 sensor is roughly twice as large as the Sony LYT-900 that underpins the primary camera inside the Xiaomi 14 Ultra (curr. $1,049 on Amazon) and Xiaomi 15 Ultra.

Now, it has outlined that the MOS uses a new Light Fusion X sensor with a native 100 MP output. By contrast, most M4/3 sensors do not surpass 25 MP. Xiaomi has also clarified that the sensor works in conjunction with a 35 mm and f/1.4 lens that has a 30 cm minimum focus distance.

Meanwhile, the MOS itself attaches to a modified Xiaomi 15 via a magnetic ring and 'LaserLink', a technology that transmits data at up to 10 Gbit/s. Theoretically, this would allow the Xiaomi 15 to process 'Ultra RAW' files in real-time, which the MOS can capture with 16 stops of dynamic range. Unfortunately, it remains to be seen whether the Xiaomi MOS will ever be mass-produced and sold as a consumer accessory.
