CES 2025 took quite a surprising turn for AMD fans when the company decided against revealing the RDNA 4 GPUs. While we might never know the true reason, it is quite easy to speculate that AMD wanted to see what Nvidia had in store with the RTX 50 series before playing their hand.
This move makes sense since, in the absence of any high-end/flagship components, AMD needs to nail the mid-range RX 9070 XT and the RX 9070 from a price/performance perspective. So far, leaks have been painting quite a good picture of the RX 9070 and the RX 9070 XT with big gains in performance. This time around leaker All_The_Watts has reported key RX 9070/XT details such as performance, reveal date, and TDP.
RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 performance
All_The_Watts claims that the RX 9070 XT performs better than or equal to the RTX 4070 Ti Super while being slower than the RTX 4080. This aligns with a previous rumor where we reported that the RX 9070 XT is faster than the RTX 4070 Ti Super and essentially on par with the RTX 4080 Super in Black Myth: Wukong.
For the RX 9070, the leaker alleges the RDNA 4 card to beat or, at the very least, match the RTX 4070 Super but not the RTX 4070 Ti Super. This is in contrast to a previous leak where the RX 9070 was shown to be on par with the RX 7900 XT, a card that is 23% faster than the RTX 4070 Super (3DMark Time Spy Graphics) per our testing, in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
That said, even if we take the lower performance projections for the RX 9070 XT and the RX 9070, the GPUs would still be 18.5% and 25% faster, respectively, than the RX 7800 XT and the RX 7700 XT in the 3DMark Time Spy Graphics.
An important thing to mention here is that, according to All_The_Watts, AMD seems to be overclocking the RX 9070/XT to squeeze more performance out of the GPUs. The effect of the overclock is apparent in the leaker’s claims regarding the clock speeds and, possibly, the TDPs.
RX 9070 and 9070 XT clock speeds and TDP
Per All_The_Watts, AMD is reportedly overclocking the RX 9070 XT to achieve clock speeds above or equal to 3 GHz. This proposed frequency is considerably more than the RX 7900 XT which has a maximum clock frequency of 2.4 GHz and a game frequency of 2 GHz.
The increase in clock speed could come at the cost of increased power consumption, as the RX 9070 XT has a reported TDP in 300 W range. For reference, the RX 7900 XT has a TDP of 315 W.
Looking at the RX 9070 non-XT, the clock speed and TDP figures allegedly come in at >= 2 GHz and 200 W range, respectively.
Finally, in line with a Moore's Law Is Dead leak, All_The_Watts also claims a reveal date of January 15 for the RDNA 4 cards. So, we only have to wait a couple of days to see if the leaked details are accurate. Until then, take the information as just an unconfirmed rumor and nothing more.
