AMD surprised many when it didn’t reveal the next-gen RDNA 4 desktop GPUs at CES 2025. Fans have been left to speculate about the possible specs, performance, and pricing of the RX 9070 and the RX 9070 XT. However, it now appears that the full RDNA 4 announcement is fast approaching and we won’t have to wait too long before we get to see the cards in action.
RX 9070 announcement and review date
According to Moore’s Law Is Dead, a source claims to have been contacted by AMD in connection with the full announcement of the RX 9070/9070 XT which is reportedly scheduled “on or around January 15th”. Additionally, a rumor posted on Chiphell suggests that the RX 9070/XT review embargo date is set for January 22. If true, this would put a 7-day gap between the official announcement and the reviews following which sales might commence before the month closes.
We also have to consider that a likely reason AMD didn’t reveal the RX 9070 cards at CES 2025 was to evaluate the RTX 50 series. Since AMD now knows Nvidia’s plans, the company could be hoping that the RX 9070 XT debuting just before the February launch date at a reportedly cheaper price takes the wind out of GeForce’s sails.
RX 9070 price and performance
According to recent leaks, the RX 9070 performs close to an RX 7900 XT, while the RX 9070 XT reportedly falls somewhere between the RTX 4080 Super and the RX 7900 XTX. Additionally, with a possible price ranging from $479 to $550, the RX 9070 XT is shaping up to be a price/performance champion, especially since AMD looks to have improved ray tracing performance as well.
Moreover, since the RX 9070 is bound to be cheaper than the RX 9070 XT, we can potentially get a banger sub-$500 GPU with 16 GB of VRAM.
No matter what happens, one thing is quite clear: If the reported performance of the RX 9070 and the RX 9070 XT pans out, Nvidia’s mid-range RTX 5070 and the RTX 5070 Ti will have a tough fight on their hands. This makes us quite excited since a majority of gamers shop mid-range GPUs. So, fierce competition between AMD and Nvidia in this segment will make things better for gamers.
