After months in preview, Nvidia finally released the new “Nvidia app” to the general public last month. The Nvidia app replaces the old GeForce Experience as the main hub for installing Nvidia drivers, accessing performance measurement tools/overlays, and enabling RTX filters.
However, it seems that Nvidia has some optimization work to do, as the Nvidia app reportedly results in a significant hit to performance in some games. The observation was made by X user Sebastian Castellanos who noted a large performance difference in Black Myth Wukong and The Talos Principle 2 with and without the Nvidia app enabled.
Nvidia app allegedly takes a big toll on gaming performance
Per Sebastian Castellanos’ testing, Black Myth: Wukong averaged around 184 FPS with the Nvidia app enabled. Disabling the app reportedly resulted in a 22% increase in the frame rate with Black Myth: Wukong shooting to 225 FPS. A similar scene took place in The Talos Principle 2 where the title ran at 192 and 231 FPS with and without the Nvidia app, respectively.
Sebastian Castellanos isn’t the only one who has noticed the Nvidia app eating performance in games, as another X user @Cactus_Cacti3 gained around 40-60 FPS in Marvel Rivals after uninstalling the Nvidia app.
While not as egregious as Sebastian’s result, @compguru910 also did some testing and found out that Black Myth: Wukong indeed gains some measurable performance with the Nvidia app disabled. The user noted an average FPS gain of around 14 FPS at 4K with the Nvidia app uninstalled using the RTX 4080 Super (Available on Amazon).
So, if you see any unusual performance degradation and have installed the new Nvidia app, uninstalling it could help.
