Sony has kept fans of its Xperia smartphones waiting a while for a new model to arrive. Seemingly, the company has decided against releasing a direct successor to the Xperia 5 V. As a result, Sony has not introduced a new smartphone globally since the Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 10 VI (curr. $389.99 on Amazon), which arrived simultaneously almost a year ago.
A recent leak suggested that the Xperia 1 VII is in an advanced stage of development, though. Now, a new mystery Xperia smartphone has surfaced at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US. Please note, an appearance on the FCC's database is not a guarantee that a device will be released. However, Sony is not one that pursues speculative FCC certifications. For instance, the company's recent earbuds were spotted on the FCC months before their official launch.
Unfortunately, the FCC's documentation does not reveal the marketing name of this new smartphone. Instead, it only provides the model number 'PY7-50337X', which some have suggested could be the Xperia 1 VII. To that end, the Xperia PY7-50337X measures 162 x 74.5 x 8.5 mm, which is right in line with expectations of the Xperia 1 VII's dimensions. In other words, the device is marginally wider and thicker than the Xperia 1 VI.
Also, the Xperia PY7-50337X has a 5,000 mAh battery just like the Xperia 1 VI. Likewise, the FCC reports that the unreleased device offers 5 W reverse wireless, 15 W wireless and 30 W wired charging. Moreover, the Xperia PY7-50337X supports 5G and Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, as well as a 3.5 mm jack for connecting external audio equipment. As it stands, Sony is expected to release the Xperia 1 VII next month for $1,399 in the US with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and a 70-200 mm periscope telephoto camera, among other upgrades.
