I never thought 4K gaming on a handheld was anywhere close to being a reality, but then I stumbled upon a video from Qīngchén DIY on bilibili, in which the creator showcased an RTX 4090-powered handheld running Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K 60 FPS.
The video is rather short, but it does showcase the DIY RTX 4090-powered handheld in its full glory. The creator is using the RTX 4090 mobile chip with 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, which can be seen when the specs of the machine appear at the beginning of the video. It’s also evident during gameplay, where the GPU runs at 174 W TGP, something the laptop RTX 4090 does. A standard gaming laptop barrel charger is also visible in the video, powering the DIY handheld.
In terms of specs, the RTX 4090-powered handheld has a 4K IPS 12.7-inch touchscreen display, as shown in the video. The same display is also used in a Dell Latitude 12 E7275. The handheld also features an Intel Core i9-14900HX, 64 GB of RAM in quad-channel mode, and a 2 TB SSD. It’s essentially a full-blown gaming laptop fitted into an almost 12.5-inch chassis. The internal hardware comes from TongFang, the same white-label laptop manufacturer behind XMG’s Neo 16 and Neo 17 models, the former of which we reviewed last year.
When it comes to gaming performance, the DIY handheld ran Cyberpunk 2077 at around 4K resolution and on high or max graphics settings. I’m not certain about these two details because the creator doesn’t explicitly show them in the video. However, with around 8.3 GB of VRAM being used in the Steam performance overlay, as visible in the footage, it’s probably safe to assume the game is running at high resolution and graphics settings. The game ran at around 60–70 FPS.
Next up, the creator ran 2016’s God of War, which delivered between 110–120 FPS and ran smoothly. The more interesting part was the handheld’s thermals: the 14900HX was around 67 °C, while the RTX 4090 was at 72 °C. Housing such powerful components in such a small chassis is already impressive, but keeping them running cool is an even more remarkable feat.
The creator goes on to showcase more gaming capabilities in the rest of the video, linked below. I suggest you watch it because a DIY RTX 4090-powered handheld is something I believe everyone should see to believe.
