XU Retro is gradually building a reputation for delivering affordable yet comparatively versatile gaming handhelds. For instance, the XU20 V32 rivals the popular TrimUI Brick (curr. $73.49 on Amazon) with similar hardware but running Android 10 instead of a Linux distribution. Now, XU Retro has revealed changes to many of its forthcoming gaming handhelds, which it has shared on Discord.
For context, the company recently teased the Retro 45 and Touch One 35. Alongside these, XU Retro also has the XU40 H55, XU35 H40 and XU35 H55 in development, which are all horizontal gaming handhelds with dual joysticks and ABXY buttons arranged in Nintendo's favoured layout. According to XU Retro, the XU40 H55 will no longer use the Allwinner A733, a 12 nm chipset that we reviewed earlier this year inside the Teclast T60 AI.
Instead, the XU40 H55 will jump to the MediaTek Dimensity 7050, which is over twice as powerful as the Allwinner A733 in our benchmarks. XU Retro has clarified that the faster chipset will be joined by a 5,300 mAh battery, 4 GB of LPDDR4x RAM, 128 GB of expandable storage and a 60 Hz touchscreen display that outputs at 1080p while measuring 5.5-inches across. The XU40 H55 will also ship running Android 15, which is a much newer version of Android than the XU20 V32 features.
Meanwhile, XU Retro has confirmed that the XU35 H40 and XU35 H50 will utilise the slower MediaTek Helio P65. Apart as fast as the Allwinner A133P, the Helio P65 will struggle beyond Nintendo 64 emulation. Although exact specifications for these pair remain unknown for the time being, the renders that XU Retro have shared so far indicate that the XU35 H45 has a narrower display than the XU35 H50, which looks like it has a 16:9 panel. Both gaming handhelds feature the same controls though, as the pictures above and below show.
