Anbernic is currently rolling out a significant update for all T820 series handhelds, adding support for external screens, paving the way for an Anbernic branded dual screen extension.

Anbernic is currently rolling out an over the air (OTA) update for its range of Android based gaming handhelds, including the RG Slide, RG 556, 406H, 406V and Cube. The most significant feature is support for external screens, presumably over USB C. Currently the only handheld vendor producing an official extra screen add-on is Retroid, and it remains to be seen whether Anbernic intends to release its own variation.

However, this functionality should enable dual screen support on almost any external monitor that supports USB-C, such as this 15 inch 1080p InnoView USB monitor ($59.99 on Amazon), albeit with a significant impact on portability. Equally, the DNA Duo and Retroid Dual Screen should be compatible in some capacity.

Other features in the update include an AI experience that offers a real time translation presented as an overlay for games that don't support a players native language. A pretty handy feature for those into obscure Japanese RPG's.

There are the usual bug fixes and optimisations included in the updated firmware, but no fix for reported cardinal snapping issues that seem to plague a number of Anbernic handhelds.

The OTA update is rolling out now for those with compatible devices.
