The previously Intel-exclusive ThinkPad T Series will now have second generation Ryzen Pro options for faster graphics performance and cheaper starting prices. AMD wants to prove that its latest processors can go toe-to-toe with Intel on higher-end business laptops and Ultrabooks.

AMD options aren't exactly new for the ThinkPad family. Lenovo has been offering AMD SKUs for its entry-level ThinkPad A and E Series such as the A275, A485, and E485 in contrast to their A270, A480, E480 Intel alternatives. It wasn't until today that the higher-end ThinkPad T series and X Series would also receive the same AMD treatment.

In keeping with the existing AMD ThinkPad naming convention, Lenovo will be launching its new AMD-powered laptops as the ThinkPad T495, T495s, and X395 to supplement the Intel-powered ThinkPad T490, T490s, and X390, respectively. AMD fans can configure up to the recently announced Ryzen 7 Pro 3700U Picasso APU that promises similar CPU performance as the pricier Intel Core i7-8550U or i7-8565U.

There are, however, a small handful of hardware changes to the AMD SKUs when compared to the Intel versions. For one, the AMD versions will not have Thunderbolt 3 ports or QHD panel options. Secondly, the AMD versions will carry newer HDMI v2.0 ports versus v1.4 on the Intel SKUs. The port differences between AMD and Intel are likely due to the motherboard and processor changes.

Existing docking stations for the T490 or X390 series will be compatible with the new AMD SKUs.

Finally, battery life is expected to be shorter on the AMD SKUs by about 45 minutes to 2 hours according to Lenovo. This is offset by the significantly faster graphics performance from the integrated Radeon RX Vega 8/10 GPU when compared to the UHD Graphics 620 series.

Expect the ThinkPad T495, T495s, and X395 to launch for $939, $1089, and $1089, respectively, when they start shipping in late May and June.
