Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro X laptop review: Elegant creative laptop with Nvidia GeForce RTX

Yoga, or rather YOGɅ, has been around for ten years at Lenovo. Initially, convertibles were developed under the brand, i.e. 2-in-1 laptops with 360° hinges and touchscreens. Meanwhile, the company is also selling classic laptops as Yoga notebooks. These high-end consumer devices are characterized by a combination of slim design and strong hardware. On top of this, no Yoga comes without a metal chassis.
The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro impresses with a high-end processor and a powerful graphics chip, namely, the Intel Core i7-12700H and the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050. Our review device makes excellent use of this hardware and hardly shows any weaknesses in various benchmarks.
Various prosumer devices from our database are comparable to the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro. All comparison devices have a slim metal case and a dedicated GPU except for the Huawei MateBook X Pro. The Samsung Galaxy Book2 15, which houses one of the new Intel Arc chips, is interesting here. The reviewed Yoga Slim 7i Pro X is also in direct competition to the Yoga Slim 7 Pro with an OLED display. The latter relies on a supposedly stronger AMD Ryzen 9 and a GeForce MX450.

Case - Renewed design
Aluminum, glass and a little plastic are the materials that give the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro X its appealing look. Where straight lines usually prevail in Lenovo's laptops, the new Yoga is curved. Rounded edges now dominate around the notebook instead of straight surfaces. The sides of the notebook thus appear soft and have a pleasant feel. Nevertheless, you can still recognize the origin of the laptop. The color of the display cover is slightly different from the base unit, with the metallic light gray of the base harmonizing excellently with the darker blue-gray of the display cover.
The combination of materials not only makes the Yoga Slim 7i Pro X haptically pleasing, but also strong in terms of stability. The screen hardly yields under torsional stress, remains stably in position when subjected to strong vibrations and can be opened up to almost 180° with one hand. Gaps are narrow and even all over. In summary, Lenovo's laptop is robust, elegant and a pleasure to hold.
The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro is a downright lightweight when compared to other notebooks with a dedicated GPU. Only the Galaxy Book 2 Pro is lighter. However, the Intel Arc A350M only possesses a TGP of 35 watts and therefore does not require quite as much cooling as the RTX 3050 in the Yoga.
Equipment - Frugal selection of ports
Lenovo does not offer many ports in its slim notebook. In order to connect more peripherals, you'll likely have to make use of docking solutions via Thunderbolt 4 in one of the fully equipped USB-C ports.
Communication
An Intel AX211 WLAN module ensures a fast connection via Wi-Fi 6E. Transmission speeds are thus fast at 1,628 MBit/s in download and 1,718 MBit/s in upload.

Webcam
The webcam in the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro has a Full HD sensor and can also be used for facial recognition via Windows Hello. So the camera partly delivers decent image quality. However, good lighting is required for this.

Security
Aside from facial recognition and the security features of the Intel Core i7, no other security features are installed on the Lenovo laptop.
Accessories
No other accessories were included in the shipping box of our review device apart from the 100-watt USB-C power adapter.
Maintenance
Five TX5 screws keep the baseplate fixed in place. Once these are removed, the cover can be easily levered out by hand from the ventilation slots. Hardly any internal components can be easily replaced. Only the SSD and WLAN module are plugged in.
Warranty
The warranty status of the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro can be checked at any time via Lenovo's Vantage program and extended if necessary. Our German review device shows a twelve-month warranty with on-site Premium Care Support.
The warranty period can be extended to a maximum of 48 months via Lenovo Vantage. Costs for this amount to around 694 Euros (~US$700). Moreover, other service options can be added via the program.
Terms of warranty may differ depending on your location, so be sure to check with your supplier before purchasing.
Input Devices - Hardly any key travel
Keyboard
At just one millimeter, key travel on the Lenovo Yoga is quite short. On the other hand, the keyboard has a clearly noticeable pressure point and is quiet. Its two-stage adjustable keyboard backlight is automatically adjusted via the ambient light sensor above the screen.
Touchpad
At 14 × 8 cm, the clickpad on the Yoga Slim 7i Pro is exceptionally large, but still positioned in such a way that it doesn't interfere with typing. The finely textured surface is made of glass and is thus durable and haptically appealing. The touchpad is also hardly susceptible to fingerprints.
Display - Strong IPS panel
Behind the display glass of the Yoga Slim 7i Pro X is an IPS panel with a 3K resolution (3072 × 1920 pixels) and almost 100% sRGB color space coverage. The screen shines brightly at 408 cd/m². But the screen is a bit slow in terms of response times and the contrast ratio of 1483:1 is not on the level of an OLED. Still, the difference to an OLED is hard to see with the naked eye here, especially when working in the sRGB color space only. In the comparison field, the screen's brightness is only surpassed by the Huawei MateBook. No flickering is present upon dimming the display. The ambient light sensor apparently does not affect the backlight here.
This means that no uneven illumination can be seen on the Yoga laptop's screen. Only the reflections in the display glass are annoying here; there is also a display option with a matte screen surface. Another option is a touchscreen. All three screen options are specified by Lenovo as having the same values for resolution, color space coverage, technology and brightness.

Even in factory settings, color deviations are already at a very low value. CalmanColorChecker determined a ΔΕ of 0.7 here. With our ICC profile from the infobox, this value drops to 0.4. In both cases, color deviations are therefore imperceptible to the human eye. After calibration, even the largest color deviation is below ΔΕ 1. The laptop screen in the Yoga Slim 7i Pro X is thus suitable for professional users who work only in the sRGB color space.

Performance - Intel Alder Lake and Nvidia GeForce perfectly matched
Our review device boasts a high-quality configuration. Intel Core i7-12700H and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 come together here to make the laptop a strong all-rounder. The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro can thus be used for gaming or working with professional photo and video programs. Moreover, many programs run faster thanks to the possibility of installing Nvidia Studio drivers, of which a complete overview can be found at Nvidia.
Testing Conditions
Various settings that regulate the laptop's performance limits can be set via Windows Power Management and the Lenovo Vantage program. If the maximum performance mode is selected in Lenovo Vantage, the CPU and GPU have a combined power consumption of 70 watts in continuous operation. Depending on how much the Nvidia GeForce 3050 is stressed, it is allocated up to 50 watts. In balanced mode (Intelligent Cooling), both chips still have up to 50 watts at their disposal. An analysis of the log files shows a combined power consumption of 35 watts both in battery operation and in energy-saving mode with an external power supply. We determined the processor's boost power to be around 85 watts.
If the Intel Core i7-12700H works alone, it can operate with around 65 watts for long periods of time, depending on the performance mode. In medium and low performance mode, the processor can still use 40 and 35 watts, respectively, for longer tasks.
The various processor and graphics chip benchmarks were run in performance mode. We measured volume and power consumption in different performance settings that correspond to the load. We determined the stamina of the battery in battery-saving mode, except in the stress test.
Prozessor
With the Intel Core i7-12700H, the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro X has a powerful processor installed. Thanks to six P-cores and eight E-cores, the computing core has up to 20 threads to play with. Unsurprisingly, the processor is found in a variety of strong laptops; according to our database, we mainly find it in powerful gaming laptops. The Yoga seems a bit small for the processor, which is why the i7 can only work with up to 65 watts of continuous power and 85 watts of boost power. This puts it well above the average of multimedia laptop rivals with the same processor. However, heavier gaming laptops such as the Lenovo Legion 5 can extract considerably more power from the processor. In battery mode, the i7-12700H works with a maximum of 35 watts, significantly reducing the available computing power.
The results in the various processor benchmarks confirm this picture. The Intel processor in the Yoga Slim 7i Pro X gives consistently high scores. AMD processors, such as in the Yoga Slim 7 Pro, no longer offer a performance advantage here.

System Performance
Upon delivery, the laptop's system performance was significantly below the results that we received after updating the graphics drivers. With Nvidia's latest drivers, the Lenovo Yoga jumped from a middle place in the comparison field to the top spot. In addition to the strong CPU and GPU chips, this is also ensured by the fast working memory and an NVMe SSD, which is very responsive and delivers high data transfer rates.
Consequently, the notebook appears to be very responsive in daily use. Office and internet applications do not present any challenges. Even extensive CAD or creative programs start quickly. Autodesk Fusion 360, for example, starts within eight seconds. Darktable is ready after only three seconds, despite an extensive database.

DPC Latency
Even with the latest drivers at the time of testing, the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro X shows significant weaknesses in the DPC latencies. We measured a delay of more than one millisecond under testing. The 4K60Hz playback in the one-minute YouTube test video also suffers as a result, omitting 477 images.

Storage Devices
According to our benchmark table of SSDs and HDDs, the Micron 3400 1TB MTFDKBA1T0TFH is one of the fastest hard drives. In our review device, it falls slightly short of its best performance values. However, the fast SSD storage was also more than 2/3 full at the time of testing. The constant drops in the read speed performance in the DiskSpd Reed loop are somewhat worrying. These may have been triggered by overheating of the Micron SSD.
