Lenovo's 15.6-inch laptop offers an Ice Lake Core i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM (dual channel mode) and a GeForce-MX350 GPU. Despite this powerful hardware, the IdeaPad's battery life is very satisfactory.

So, if you guys are looking to buy this device, tell us what you think about it? In our view, it is not yet worth the upgrade over the Ideapad S540, unless you get the IPS panel, max out the memory and the actual battery life is miles ahead. And of course, you wish to play games. Yes, the MX350 is a substantial upgrade over the MX250.

Lenovo's mobile 14-inch laptop scores points with a powerful APU, an NVMe SSD, and a successful keyboard (backlit). The battery life is very good too.

For the most part, this Lenovo IdeaPad 5 feels and performs like a much more expensive product. It's a very quick little laptop, and also quiet and comfortable with daily use. It’s also well made, with the exception of that sensible metal lid, types well, and includes the IO and the battery life that I'd need while on the go. However, having used it for the last few weeks, I decided a 54% sRGB screen won't do for me and I'd rather pay extra for a better-quality panel. My entire experience with this notebook is documented down below.

To sum up, what we’ve seen today, let’s start with the processor. Obviously, the Ryzen 4000U CPUs, or Renoir as AMD calls them, are very capable little devices. And what can show it better than their lowest tier processor – the Ryzen 3 4300U? Having four cores without multithreading, it should have been in the range of performance of the Core i3-10110U. However, this is an extremely potent sucker, delivering something that only a tight group of laptops equipped with at least the Core i5-10210U can reach.

With a proper screen, the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 would punch way above its class. This a well built portable laptop able to keep silent and efficient with daily use, while also unleashing the full-potential of the Ryzen hardware in demanding loads, without overheating or running noisy. It's such a pity Lenovo still don't configure a 100% sRGB panel on this series; with the one on offer, only the budget lower-specced models of this laptop make sense to me, and less so the other models. Up to you, though, if you're willing to sacrifice on the display for everything else.

Overall, Lenovo used some great parts for constructing the IdeaPad 5i Chromebook, including the internals, but I can’t get past the price. If the price were dropped down by, say $50 with Intel’s 11th Gen i3 processor, I’d recommend this Chromebook to those who need something at a reasonable price.

The IdeaPad 5 Gaming Chromebook is a solid entry into the Chromebook arena for both cloud and day-to-day productivity. It has a bright, sharp display, good performance, great network connectivity, tons of ports, and long battery life. Lenovo’s design is a whiff, though, and that’s a wrinkle. The Acer Chromebook 516 GE, an alternative gaming-focused Chromebook with a 16-inch display, offers everything found in the Lenovo alongside a more attractive and luxurious chassis. Acer also provides a slightly quicker Intel Core i5-1240P processor. That makes the Lenovo tough to recommend, especially when the Acer is on sale (it’s currently available for $549.99 at Best Buy). I recommend the Acer if it’s the same price as the Lenovo, or less—but the IdeaPad 5 Gaming Chromebook is a fine second choice.

Okay, let’s say that you have around $700-800 in your bank account, which is not allocated for bills, food, or strippers. And you desperately need a new laptop, which you’re going to use as a daily driver, and a workhorse. What should you do? Well, if you are into games, you can check out the IdeaPad Gaming 3 (15″, 2022), or the Nitro 5 (AN515-58). But if you don’t need a gaming machine, and even prefer something that comes in a stylish outfit, features a rigid construction, and feels premium, then the IdeaPad 5 (15″, 2022) might be the device for you. Yes, there are a couple of additional features, which will be pretty convincing – like the Full HD Web camera with a privacy shutter, or the optional fingerprint reader, embedded in the power button. However, the one that makes the choice is you. If decide to get the IdeaPad 5 (15″, 2022), make sure you get the 16GB model, as you will probably struggle with 8GB in the future.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.
In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.
In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce MX350: Successor of the MX250 and most likely a renamed GeForce GTX 1050 based on the Pascal GP107 chip with 640 shaders and a 64 Bit memory bus for GDDR5.
AMD Vega 6: Integrated graphics adapter of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 6 CUs (= 384 shaders) and a clock of up to 1,500 MHz.
AMD Vega 7: Integrated graphics adapter of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 7 CUs (= 448 shaders) and a clock speed of up to 1,600 MHz.
AMD Vega 5: Integrated graphics card of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 5 CUs (= 320 shaders) and a clock of up to 1400 MHz.
Intel Iris Xe G7 80EUs: Integrated graphics card in Intel Tiger Lake G7 SoCs based on the new Gen. 12 architecture with 80 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model. The Tiger Lake chips are produced in the modern 10nm+ process at Intel.
NVIDIA GeForce MX450: Gimped GeForce GTX 1650 (Turing TU117) based entry level GPU with GDDR5 or GDDR6 graphics memory. Available in 4 different variants, where the LP = low power version with 12 Watt TGP is the slowest.
AMD Vega 8: Integrated graphics card of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 8 CUs (= 512 shaders) and a clock of up to 2.100 MHz.
Intel UHD Graphics Xe G4 48EUs: Integrated graphics card in Intel Tiger Lake G4 SoCs based on the new Gen. 12 architecture with 48 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model. The Tiger Lake chips are produced in the modern 10nm+ process at Intel.
AMD Radeon 780M: Integrated graphics card in the Ryzen 7040 mobile series APUs based on the RDNA3 architecture with 12 CUs (= 768 shaders) and a clock speed of up to 3 GHz.
Qualcomm Adreno X1-45 1.7 TFLOPS: An integrated graphics adapter that the Snapdragon X Plus 8-core X1P-42-100 SoC features. Compared to the faster 3.8 TFLOPS and 4.6 TFLOPS X1-85 iGPUs, this one does not just run at lower clock speeds but also has fewer unified shaders at its disposal, with 768 being the most likely number. The underlying architecture is reportedly not much different from what was used in the Adreno 730. As for its gaming performance, it's only just sufficient for pre-2020 games at resolutions such as HD 720p on low graphics settings.
Intel Iris Xe G7 96EUs: Integrated graphics card in Intel Tiger Lake G4 SoCs based on the new Gen. 12 architecture with 96 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model. The Tiger Lake chips are produced in the modern 10nm+ process at Intel.

Intel Ice Lake:
i5-1035G1: A low-power, Ice Lake family processor (SoC) featuring 4 cores, 8 threads, 6 MB of L3 cache and the UHD G1 (32 EUs) iGPU. This Core i5 saw the light of day in H2 2019; it is designed for use in highly portable consumer laptops. The CPU cores run at 1.0 GHz to 3.6 GHz. The Sunny Cove microarchitecture that is in use here is notable for several improvements over Skylake including support for new technologies, new instruction sets and fast LPDDR4-3733 RAM. There is no PCIe 4 support here, however.
AMD Renoir (Ryzen 4000 APU):
R5 4500U: An upper mid-range, hexa-core APU designed for use in thinner, lighter laptops. The Ryzen features Zen 2 CPU cores running at 2.3 GHz to 4.0 GHz along with the Vega 6 graphics adapter (6 x 64 = 384 unified shaders). The thread-doubling SMT technology is not enabled in the case of Ryzen 5 4500U.
R7 4700U: A mobile Octa-Core APU with Zen 2 cores clocked at 2 to 4.1 GHz and a Vega graphics adapter with 7 CUs clocked at up to 1600 MHz. Compared to the faster 4800U, the 4700U offers a slightly lower boost clock speed and does not support SMT.
R3 4300U: Mobile Quad-Core APU using four Zen 2 cores clocked at 2.7 to 3.7 GHz and a Vega graphics adapter with 5 CUs clocked at up to 1400 MHz. The CPU does not support SMT / Hyperthreading.
Intel Tiger Lake:
i5-1135G7: A quad-core, mid-range processor of Tiger Lake product family designed for use in ultra-light laptops. The i5 is manufactured on Intel's second-gen 10 nm process marketed as SuperFin and features an 80 EU Iris Xe G7 iGPU. Core i5-1135G7 has a base clock speed of 2.4 GHz as long as it is allowed to consume 28 watts.
i7-1165G7: An upper mid-range, quad-core processor of Tiger Lake product family. The i7 is designed for use in ultra-light (yet actively cooled) laptops; it is manufactured on Intel's third-gen 10 nm process marketed as SuperFin. The CPU cores run at 2.8 GHz (base clock speed @ 28 W TDP) to 4.7 GHz (single-core Boost frequency). This i7 features the 96 EU Intel Iris Xe G7 iGPU; it was the second-fastest CPU of TGL-UP3 line-up when Intel initially launched the series in 2020.
Pentium 7505: An energy-efficient dual-core processor of the Tiger Lake product family designed for thin and light laptops. The Pentium is produced on the second-gen 10 nm Intel SuperFin process. The two CPU cores run at 2 GHz to 3.5 GHz.
AMD Lucienne (Zen 2, Ryzen 5000):
R5 5500U: A hexa-core APU designed for use in ultra-thin, upper mid-range laptops. The Ryzen features six Zen 2 CPU cores running at 2.1 GHz to 4.0 GHz alongside the Vega 7 graphics adapter (448 unified shaders running at up to 1,800 MHz). One could be forgiven for thinking Ryzen 5 5500U is a renamed Ryzen 5 4500U - which is not the case. Ryzen 5 5500U is most similar to Ryzen 5 4600U, the most noteworthy difference between the two being the faster iGPU model of the former.
R7 5700U: A laptop-grade APU featuring eight SMT-enabled Zen 2 cores running at 1.8 GHz to 4.3 GHz and a Vega series graphics adapter with 8 CUs clocked at up to 1,900 MHz.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
16.00:
This range for display formats was and is a rarity. It is larger than the general standard of 15 inches, but not yet in the range of large workstations. One usually has higher screen resolutions available, but portability suffers from that.
