A photograph of a man holding what is claimed to be the upcoming “Redmi 855” flagship smartphone in his hand has been uploaded to the Chinese social network site Weibo. The whole thing seems incredibly spurious at first until it’s pointed out that the man in question just happens to be the Redmi CEO, Lu Weibing.

It’s possible the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855-powered Redmi (aka “Redmi 855") has just made a public appearance, in this case at a movie theater. According to a report from Sparrows News, Redmi boss Lu Weibing was greeted by a blogger at the location who managed to take a cheeky snapshot of the executive holding what is believed to be the Redmi 855.

Redmi has a partnership with the Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame movie, and it seems the Redmi CEO was attending a premier of the film while carelessly brandishing the rumored smartphone. Not much can be worked out from the photo and the grainy close-up (see below), but there are certainly many that believe this to be the Redmi 855 flagship.

Yet again, this could be another example of crafty Xiaomi marketing. The way Lu Weibing is holding the phone is very convenient for a “lucky” shot – it’s possible to see the full-screen display that adds credibility to the rumor that the Redmi 855 will have a pop-up camera.

Another interesting rumor about the Redmi 855 flagship smartphone is its expected cost. Prices of 1,999/2,000 yuan have been suggested for the device, which currently works out at just under US$300. This is for a smartphone with a full-screen display, pop-up camera, Snapdragon 855 SoC, and knowing Xiaomi/Redmi a whole host of other features and surprises.
