The LG G5 and its tandem OLED panel will launch this month, but LG Display has also confirmed some details about its upcoming gaming monitors, which will benefit from the state-of-the-art panel technology. More specifically, the 27-inch panel boasts a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels, which suggests that it will serve as the successor to the LG UltraGear OLED 27GR95QE (from $749 on Amazon).
This new panel supposedly offers an HDR peak brightness of 1,500 nits (1.5 percent APL). This is a notable upgrade compared to the 1,000 nits of the previous generation and the 1,300 nits achieved by LG’s brightest OLED monitors thus far. In SDR mode, the screen should hit a full-screen brightness of 335 nits, which would be a 65% increase compared to the 27GR95QE-B. Purportedly, the panel also has significantly improved color reproduction, but the South Korean company has not yet provided specifications to back up this claim.
According to FlatPanelsHD, the tandem OLED panel might support LG’s so-called “Dual Mode”, which can increase the refresh rate from 240Hz to 480Hz by reducing resolution. Of course, the gaming monitor can be used at 240Hz at its native resolution.
The new panel is expected to hit the market in 2025, but LG Display has not disclosed when mass production of the smaller tandem OLED panel will kick off or when corresponding gaming monitors will become available. In any case, additional tandem OLED panels for gaming monitors in other sizes are expected to follow later.
