Khadas Mind mini PC can transform into an RTX 4060M gaming system or convertible laptop via modular design
The mini PC market is already quite diverse when it comes to the numerous form-factors, and Intel’s NUC licensing strategy will surely make things even more interesting in the years to come, but the design and functionality sides have not seen much innovation over the past years. Wesion, a relatively new Chinese mini PC maker, is looking to spice things up with a modular device called Mind, which builds upon a proprietary docking concept.
Wesion’s Khadas Mind is a compact workstation mini PC that measures 146 x 105 x 20 mm (5.7 x 4.1 x 0.7 inches) or slightly larger than a mobile phone and weighs 450 g (~1 lb). This is the main device, which integrates an Intel Core i7-1360P with 4 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores for a total of 16 threads. It also comes with 32 GB of LPDDR5-5200 RAM and supports up to 4 TB of NVMe SSD storage via one PCIe 4.0 slot and two additional PCIe 3.0 slots. Port selection includes a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 connector with DP and PD, another USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 with DP and PD, 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, an DMI 2.0b video out and a proprietary Mind Link with PCIe 5.0 interface that allows this device to dock with other modules for expanded functionality.
If more ports are needed, users may combine the Khadas Mind mini workstation with the Mind Dock. The port selection is thus expanded with 3x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, 1x USB-C (PD mode), 2x HDMI 2.0, audio jack, 2.5 GbE jack and full-size SD card reader. There is also what looks like a circular audio volume knob.
Users can also dock the Khads Mind with a module called Mind Graphics, which integrates an Nvidia RTX 4060 mobile dGPU. This module also comes with a few additional ports like a USB-C, a USB-A, audio jack and SD card reader. Apparently, the dGPU is passively cooled, so the module chassis seems a bit bulkier.
There are plans for more modules, including one called Mind xPlay, which adds a portable display plus a detachable keyboard, essentially enabling a notebook experience, or the Mind Talk that adds a mic array for VoIP conferencing.
According to CNX Software, the Khadas Mind is to launch in the next few weeks along with the Mind Dock and hopefully more details regarding pricing and availability for the other modules.
