Huawei has made a name for itself in the smartwatch market with rather unique products such as the Huawei Watch D, which can measure blood pressure and does not require calibration with a traditional blood pressure cuff. Now, Huawei has patented a smartwatch with an in-display fingerprint sensor, which appears to be similar to what we've seen on many Android smartphones.
The patent specifically mentions an optical fingerprint sensor which is capable of recognizing multiple fingerprints. Interestingly, the fingerprint sensor isn't just capable of unlocking the smartwatch, it also supports certain gestures. According to the patent, it would be possible to open a specific app by placing a thumb on the sensor, or call a particular phone number with a tap with the middle finger. In another example, swiping a finger across the sensor could adjust the screen brightness or volume.
Arguably, these gestures could significantly speed up smartwatch operation. Additionally, the fingerprint sensor would enhance security. Compared to the typically four-digit PIN used to unlock a smartwatch, a fingerprint sensor is considerably safer. This is especially important for contactless payments, but it also protects personal data if the smartwatch is stolen or lost.
