Pixel smartphones have a feature called Adaptive Charging
which is a charging optimization feature that protects the device's battery and extends its lifespan. A report says the feature may be coming to the Pixel Watch soon, although the specific models that will get the feature are unknown.
First reported by Android Authority, evidence of the feature was found in new strings of code for the Pixel Watch Management Service system app (version 2024.10.14.685782837). There's no mention of how the feature will work, which is the main concern considering the way users charge them is different from the way they charge their phones.
Interestingly, Pixel smartwatches have a feature called Battery Defender
that works in a slightly similar way. When a Pixel Watch is plugged in for 4 days or more, Battery Defender pauses charging to protect the battery. It also keeps the battery at 80% or less. To get the watch to fully charge, owners will have to disconnect it from the charger and then place it back on it.
Pending the release of more details, there's no arguing that a battery optimization feature for the Pixel Watch is necessary considering the short battery life and the fact that it cannot be repaired. The Pixel Watch 3 (41mm version available on Amazon for $299.99), which is the latest model, has a battery life of up to 24 hours but it can be extended to 36 hours when battery saver mode is activated.
