The Forerunner smartwatch series has a time of it lately when it comes to software changes. Garmin started the year by issuing a series of beta updates with the promise of Run and Cycling Coach upgrades, plus HR zone improvements. These were swiftly overshadowed by the return of the 'triangle of death', which could result in data loss unless one uses Garmin's backup and restore feature.
Now, the company has returned to releasing new beta builds for its actively supported Forerunner smartwatches, including the Forerunner 255 and Forerunner 955 (curr. $396 on Amazon). This time, the company has jumped to Beta Version 22.18, which replaces Beta Version 22.14 with a series of bug fixes and one other change. Dealing with the latter first, Garmin claims that Beta Version 22.18 adds the option of using custom workouts with its Stair Stepper profile.
Half a dozen bug fixes should ship with the new update too, although one of these bundles 'various' bug fixes and improvements into one line on Garmin's changelog. Garmin reports that roughly 20% of Forerunner 165, Forerunner 255, Forerunner 265, Forerunner 955 and Forerunner 965 smartwatches should have received a notification to download Beta Version 22.18. If not, one can navigate through Menu, System and Software Update before selecting Check for Updates. For reference, the new beta update contains the following bug fixes:
- Fix stress glance bugs.
- Fix gesture setting over power cycle.
- Fix Tone setting for notifications.
- Fix touch interaction during Checking For Updates.
- Fix LiveTrack popup messages during Resume Later.
- Various bug fixes and improvements.
