It may not be the first foldable laptop in the market, but that may work to HP’s advantage. The 17-inch Spectre Fold looks poised to overcome some of the growing pains on the 2021 ThinkPad X1 Fold with its much-improved 2.5K OLED HDR touchscreen, faster Core i7-1250U CPU, and more.

When Lenovo launched the ThinkPad X1 Fold two years ago, we noted several issues with it despite its unique and intriguing foldable touchscreen. For 2023, HP will be taking its own stab at the same foldable concept called the Spectre Fold.

The extra development time for HP has allowed the maker to dodge some glaring issues on the ThinkPad X1 Fold. For example, performance should be significantly faster as the Spectre Fold will be powered by a proper Core-U series CPU instead of the passively-cooled Core i5-L16G7. Secondly, its display is expected to be brighter at up to 400 nits whereas the ThinkPad X1 Fold would barely reach 250 nits. The much larger screen size (17-inch vs. 13.3-inch) and integrated Thunderbolt 4 support further add to the versatility of the model.

Other unique features of the Spectre Fold include its very narrow 5 mm folding radius which HP says is one of the smallest in the industry. This means that the unit can be folded more tightly along its crease to reduce gap size. The model also integrates four speakers and two battery packs that are positioned in such a way to improve the center of gravity when in laptop mode.

There are a few other similarities to the recent dual-screen Lenovo Yoga Book worth mentioning. The Spectre Fold ships with a Bluetooth keyboard that can fit in between the screen of the Spectre Fold folded and it can be placed on one side of the screen for laptop mode much like on the Lenovo. The keyboard charges wirelessly via induction when in this mode.

Best Buy and HP are currently accepting pre-orders in the U.S. while other regions will follow later in the fall. First shipments are expected to arrive in October. The $5000 USD price point will surely turn some heads, but we’d rather see an expensive and refined foldable laptop done right than a cheaper foldable with too many cut corners.
