Google Pixel Fold 2 rumoured to jump to Tensor G4 SoC with probable fall 2024 release alongside Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel Watch 3
Mishaal Rahman has shed new light on a second-generation Pixel Fold. To recap, Google announced its first foldable during I/O 2023 in May 2023 alongside the Pixel 7a, both with Tensor G2 chipsets. While the company hoped to begin shipping early orders in June, it took until August for pre-orders to reach numerous customers.
As such, the Tensor G2-touting Pixel Fold actually arrived in some cases less than two months before Google presented the Tensor G3 through the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. According to Rahman, a source has informed him that Google will homogenise its chipset offerings across its flagships with the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel Fold 2. In other words, the Pixel Fold series will miss the Tensor G3 entirely, instead jumping to its Tensor G4 successor.
Until now, Google had been expected to maintain its annual smartphone refresh strategy, thus delivering a Pixel Fold successor in spring 2024. The assertion that it has based the Pixel Fold 2 around the same chipset as the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro suggests otherwise, though. Hence, it now seems that the Pixel Fold 2 may not debut until early fall 2024, presumably along with the Pixel Watch 3, as well as the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro.
