Google Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 8 and the like get camera upgrades and new features via Android 15 and feature drop
Google has just released its October 2024 feature drop for the Pixel 6 and newer devices. As usual, it may take a few days for the update to be available to all users of compatible smartphones. The trailer embedded below reveals some of the most important new features in action.
Following the update, Google's Gemini AI assistant can be used on all Pixel Buds, including the first-generation Pixel Buds Pro and the cheaper Pixel Buds A. Gemini Live is now available free of charge. The update introduces the "Audio Magic Eraser", which can be used to make certain sounds in videos louder or quieter, such as removing background noise from a clip. This feature is available on the Pixel 8 and newer models.

The thermometer app now shows a camera preview on the Pixel 8 Pro so that users can more easily see which surface the temperature is currently being measured from. The Pixel Weather app now displays the current pollen count, broken down into grasses, tree pollen and herbs, which aims to help allergy sufferers gauge the risk of an allergic reaction. Another exciting feature is the new anti-theft protection, which uses AI to detect when a Pixel smartphone is snatched from its owner's hand and automatically locks the device in such instances.
The automatic lock also kicks in if the smartphone is dropped or is offline, although both functions can be deactivated if desired. The update also allows users to use night mode in Instagram, while new astrophotography features have been added to create more beautiful landscape shots with starry skies. Photos and videos taken underwater are now supposed to look more colorful and authentic.
Google is also concurrently rolling out Android 15 for Pixel smartphones. In addition to improved theft protection, Android 15 introduces the option of creating a private area. In this password-protected area, banking or dating apps can be stored, which are then practically invisible to other users and do not appear in the search or the app list.
Foldable smartphones such as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and tablets now also have the option of saving apps as pairs so that they are always opened in a previously configured split-screen view.
