NVIDIA GeForce 710M vs ATI Radeon HD 3100

NVIDIA GeForce 710M

► remove from comparison

The NVIDIA GeForce 710M is an entry-level, DirectX 11 compatible graphics card that has been announced in spring 2013. Its core is based on the 28nm GF117 chip (Fermi architecture) with 64-bit DDR3 memory. Compared to the older GT 620M, the 710M is clocked condiderably higher.

Architecture

The GF117 is based on the optimized GF108 Fermi chip (GeForce GT 540M) and offers 96 shaders, 16 TMUs and 4 ROPs. Each shader core is clocked twice as fast as the rest of the graphics chip, a technique known as hot clocking. More detailed information on Fermi can be found on the GT 435M GPU page.

It should be noted that the GF117 does not offer dedicated graphic ports and can therefore only be used in conjunction with Optimus.

The 710M supports GPU Boost 2.0, which can automatically overclock the card if the laptop cooling system allows it. This feature is available on any notebook with a graphics card of the 700M series.

Performance

Depending on the clock rates, the 3D performance of the GeForce 710M is just slightly below the GT 720M, but a bit faster than the GT 620M. In comparison to the competition, the 710M offers a performance similar to the HD Graphics 4400/4600 and Radeon HD 7660G. This places the card in the entry level segment. Current games (as of 2013) will run fluently only in low settings.

Features

The shader cores (also called CUDA cores) can be used for general calculations with APIs such as CUDA, DirectCompute 2.1 and OpenCL. PhysX is theoretically possible, but the 710M is too slow to handle both PhysX and 3D rendering in modern games. 3D Vision is not supported according to Nvidia.

Power consumption

The power consumption of the Geforce 710M should be similar or slightly above the GT 620M. As a result, the GPU is best suited for notebooks 14 inches in size or greater.

ATI Radeon HD 3100

► remove from comparison

The AMD ATI Radeon HD 3100 (without the Mobility brand) is an onboard graphics card by AMD for the Turion X2 (Ultra) CPUs. It is built in the RS780MC chipset and is basically a HD 3200 with a slower clock speed and some reduced features (some sources say reduced video accelleration). The clock rate and feature set can be different depending on the laptop model. E.g. core clocks of 300 and 350 MHz have been reported by GPU-Z (Hd 3200 up to 500 MHz).

The 3D performance is similar to the HD 3200 one and therefore relatively good for an integrated chipset (much faster than the GMA 4500MHD and a bit beyond the GeForce 9400M). For older or less demanding games the performance may be sufficient.

Using Windows XP, the HD 3200 seems to have problems with current and older drivers, as there is no 2D accelleration. This leads to very slow interactions with windows and scrolling (especially with Firefox as reported in various discussion boards). More information on the topic can be found at Planet 3D Now (de) or the AMD forum.
