Garmin releases new high-end smartwatch globally with brighter AMOLED display and 29 days battery life
Garmin has now launched the Fenix 9 as part of today's 'Play Harder' event. Directly replacing the Fenix 8 (curr. $749 on Amazon), the Fenix 9 has been joined by the Fenix 9 Pro too. Please see our launch article for more details about the company's latest titanium-backed smartwatch.
As for the Fenix 9, Garmin claims to have included a new 1.4-inch AMOLED display that is twice as bright as the equivalent found on the Fenix 8. Unfortunately, Garmin has not shared specifics in this regard. Memory in Pixel (MiP) display options have only returned on the Fenix 9 Pro, too.
Setting that aside, the Fenix 9 also features twice as much storage as its predecessor. Garmin complements 64 GB of RAM with 50% more RAM and an updated map engine, the combination of which is said to improve map panning responsiveness by up to 30%. On top of that, Garmin has added functionality like stamina curve, stamina zones and expanded rucking features..
Furthermore, the Fenix 9 supports Garmin Epic, which can combine months' worth of activities into one with linked performance and health data. Battery life also differs between 43 mm, 47 mm, and 51 mm sizes, with up to 10 days, 16 days, and 29 days of battery life quoted, respectively. Ultimately, these merely match the Fenix 8 and fall short of MiP-backed Fenix 7 models.
The Fenix 9 starts at $999 as a 43 mm smartwatch, $100 less than the Fenix 9 Pro. Incidentally, this pricing matches the Fenix 8 when it came out in August 2024. Moreover, the Fenix 9's 47 mm variant is the same price as its 43 mm counterpart.
Meanwhile, Garmin applies a $100 surcharge for its 51 mm variant, thereby raising it to $1,099. It is worth noting that the company reserves solar charging and inReach connectivity for the Fenix 9 Pro. Orders will open on August 28, despite all listings going live today.
