Considering the skyrocketing memory and storage prices of late, opting for a barebones mini PC might be an excellent idea for folks who are able to supply their own memory and storage sticks. For instance, the GMKtec K12 is a great AMD-powered mid-range gaming mini PC with OCuLink support, the barebones variant of which is now available at just $350 on GMKtec's official website.
AMD Hawk Point APU for mid-range performance in 2026
The mini PC is powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 H 255 APU with 8 cores and 16 threads. The Zen 4 APU is basically a rebranded version of the Ryzen 7 8745H, promising multi-core performance that is roughly in the same league as an Apple M3 Pro and Intel Core Ultra 9 185H in synthetic benchmarks. In simpler terms, the CPU performance of the K12 mini PC should be sufficient for most moderately intensive workloads, as is indicated by our detailed review of the system.
GPU performance is quite limited, being powered by the Radeon 780M iGPU which is over 3 years old at this point. Some lightweight gaming and non-intensive workloads should still be doable on the system. Of course, the presence of an OCuLink port allows for speedy eGPU setups, which will definitely allow for a much more pleasant gaming experience on the mini PC.
The K12 mini PC is not without flaws
Moreover, our in-depth review of the GMKtec K12 mini PC reveals a few notable drawbacks - the vapor chamber cooling system with dual fans can get audibly loud, and the performance is unsurprisingly identical to the Ryzen 7 8745H. We were still quite pleased with the system's overall performance despite the old APU, and appreciated the I/O selection and triple M.2 slots. The detailed list of ports on offer can be found below:
- USB 4, USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C
- Dual USB 2.0 Type-A, Triple USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A
- OCuLink
- HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4
- Dual 2.5G Ethernet
- 3.5 mm audio
At its current price, the GMKtec K12 mini PC sports decent value for folks who are willing to look past the system's aforementioned downsides, and can take advantage of the triple M.2 slots, OCuLink support, and great connectivity features. However, folks who are unable to supply their own RAM and storage can opt for the 32 GB + 512 GB variant, available for just under $600 on Amazon.
