Square Enix is compensating eligible Final Fantasy XIV subscribers after a critical PHP vulnerability prompted the company to suspend new logins worldwide for approximately one day. The publisher has also confirmed that new logins and the server backup feature have since been restored.

Square Enix has announced that eligible Final Fantasy XIV subscribers will receive an additional day of game time after a critical security vulnerability forced the publisher to suspend new logins worldwide. Square Enix suspended new logins for approximately one day between October 21 and 22, 2026, while implementing emergency security enhancements.

In an official announcement published on October 23, Square Enix confirmed that compensation would begin rolling out on October 28. The publisher said the unexpected nature of the shutdown and its extended duration had prompted the decision to compensate affected subscribers.

Who qualifies for the free Final Fantasy XIV game time?

The additional day of game time will be granted to service accounts that meet two requirements:

  • The full version of Final Fantasy XIV must be registered to the account.
  • The account must have had an active subscription on October 21 or October 22, 2026 (PDT).

For players with recurring subscriptions, Square Enix will extend the subscription end date by one day. Paid optional services, including additional retainer subscriptions, will receive the same extension.

Accounts without recurring subscription payments will instead have one day of game time added.

The compensation process begins at 12:00 a.m. PDT on October 28, equivalent to 7:00 a.m. GMT. Square Enix expects distribution to take two to three days because of the number of eligible accounts.

The announcement applies to the global version of Final Fantasy XIV. Compensation arrangements will differ in other operating regions depending on the disruption experienced and applicable local laws.

Critical PHP vulnerability forced worldwide login restrictions

The disruption began on October 21, when Square Enix temporarily suspended new logins across all worlds while responding to a critical vulnerability affecting the PHP programming language.

The publisher took its patch servers offline to implement security enhancements, preventing players from initiating new logins. The emergency measures were introduced in response to a wider security issue affecting systems worldwide.

In a follow-up notice on October 22, Square Enix confirmed that updated patch servers had been released at approximately 5:16 a.m. PDT, allowing new logins to resume.

However, the game's server backup feature for save data remained temporarily unavailable while further security work continued.

That restriction was subsequently lifted on October 23, with Square Enix confirming that the server backup function had resumed at approximately 1:35 a.m. PDT.

Square Enix's announcements do not report any compromise of player accounts or personal information. The company said it suspended new logins while implementing security enhancements in response to the vulnerability.

Square Enix restored Final Fantasy XIV logins on October 22 following emergency security updates.

Square Enix responds to disruption affecting paying subscribers

Square Enix's decision compensates eligible subscribers for the period during which new logins were unavailable.

The announcement has also attracted attention from the game's community. A discussion on the Final Fantasy XIV subreddit has focused on the compensation announcement and its implications for subscribers.

New logins resumed on October 22, followed by the restoration of the server backup feature on October 23. Eligible subscribers will begin receiving their additional game time on October 28.
