Final Fantasy 7 Revelation playable Gamescom demo leaks despite 2027 release date

Fans already knew the conclusion to the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy was coming to Gamescom 2026. Attendees may also be the first to experience the Square Enix game hands-on. Before editing the article, GamesWirtschaft leaked that the event would feature a Final Fantasy 7 Revelation playable demo.
Too soon for a demo?
According to the German gaming site, starting on August 25th or just after, the title will be accessible in Hall 8 at the Cologne venue. GamesWirtschaft may have made an error other than revealing embargoed information. The Final Fantasy 7 Revelation release date is not until Spring 2027. Still, director Naoki Hamaguchi has hinted that development is at an advanced stage.
In an August 1st Automaton interview, Hamaguchi said that the studio is “preparing a way for players and the media to try out the game at various events.” While he didn’t name a specific showcase, Gamescom or the September 17th Tokyo Game Show were obvious targets.

Prior to the latest leak, the Final Fantasy game was expected to have a presence in Germany. Hamaguchi himself is hosting a “new look” at gameplay, potentially highlighting open-world areas and combat. That said, a social media post from Square Enix only discussed playable demos for existing releases like FF7 Rebirth and the FX/X-2 HD Remaster.
A Final Fantasy game on a fast track
As far back as June 2026, the director confirmed he had completed a playthrough of a build 40 times. The Summer Game Fest trailer also provided a fairly extended look at the project. Consequently, some players might have anticipated an earlier Final Fantasy 7 Revelation release date.
If the final chapter in the trilogy matches the scope of the previous titles, bug fixing and optimization will be a lengthy process. Unlike Remake Intergrade and Rebirth, it’s launching simultaneously on the PC, Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox consoles. Hamaguchi has assigned development teams to each platform, but it’s still a trickier undertaking.
Along with trying the playable demo, Gamescom visitors may also hope to learn about pre-order options. However, it’s likely too soon to know whether, with PlayStation ditching physical games in 2028, a PS5 disc will be an option.
